Authorities arrested a woman on Thursday who barricaded herself in a home near Target and threatened to harm herself, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers for evaluation.

Law enforcement responded to 112 Amity Lane on Thursday at about 4 p.m. in response to a woman, described as “irate,” who was armed with a gun and threatening to harm herself, according to police.

Public Safety officers, including a trained negotiator, continued to talk with the suspect until she was arrested around 6:40 p.m.

No shots were fired during the incident; however, an older woman, identified as the suspect's mother, was with the suspect in the home and sustained non-life-theatening injuries, according to Lt. Jake Mahoney.

There was no word at press time on what charges, if any, will be filed against the suspect.

Spencer Drive from Bennington Lane to New Haven Lane was closed during the incident as a precaution.
