An Aiken man was detained on weapons charges after police responded to a fight in progress last week, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

Jaylen Lawrence, 18, of Washington Drive, was charged with unlawful possession of a pistol and possession of a stolen pistol. He was placed in the Aiken County detention center.

Police were called to a fight in progress on Carver Terrace about 2 p.m. on June 19, according to an incident report. Several people fled the scene when police arrived, and due to a report of a gun being involved, the remaining individuals were ordered to place their hands on their heads.

Lawrence reportedly tried multiple times to reach into his pocket despite officer commands not to, police said. During a search of Lawrence, officers found a 30-round magazine in one pocket and a pistol in the other pocket, police said.

The pistol was loaded with 17 bullets in the magazine, and Lawrence reportedly had 16 other bullets in his pocket, the report stated. The gun showed up in the National Crime Information Center as stolen during a 2013 burglary.
