Polls open today at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m.

Eyes are on who will come out their respective party’s winner in the state superintendent of education runoff.

Democrats Sheila Gallagher and Tom Thompson will face one another today, with Sally Atwater and Molly Spearman running against one another on the Republican ballot.

Also, Mike Campbell and Henry McMaster, the two Republicans who came within a decimal point of each other in Aiken County during the state primary earlier this month, will go head-to-head again today for the nomination for lieutenant governor.

Whoever takes the majority will face Democrat Bakari Sellers in November.

There are a couple of rules to keep in mind before voting.

• If during the state primaries an individual voted on the Republican ballot, that same individual can’t vote for a Democrat in the runoff election, or vice versa.

• If an individual didn’t get to vote in the June 10 primaries, that resident can still vote in either party’s runoff.

• Since the June 10 primaries, there were changes to the precinct list. Voters should double check their precinct before voting.

• Residents will be asked to show a specific form of identification at the polls. Voters must either have a South Carolina driver’s license, an ID card issued by the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles, a U.S. passport, a federal military ID or a S.C. voter registration card with a photo.

• If voters do not have a current form of ID from the list above, registered voters can receive a voter registration card with a photo from the Registration and Elections Office by providing a date of birth and the last four digits of their Social Security number.

• The deadline to register for the general election is Oct. 4.

• The general election will be held on Nov. 4.

The Registration and Elections Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more information about what individuals need to vote, how to vote or where to vote, either visit or call the Aiken County Voters Registration and Election Office at 803-642-2028.
