On Monday, The Gun Rack opened for business at its new and larger location, which features an indoor gun range.
The store, previously located on Richland Avenue in downtown Aiken for more than 30 years, shut its doors in April, and on Monday opened its new location on Edgefield Highway near Reynolds Pond Road.
The new location includes a larger showroom and an indoor gun range with six handgun lanes and four rifle lanes.
The facility also has a classroom and members lounge.
“Ever since we got involved with The Gun Rack five-and-a-half years ago, our ultimate goal was to bring a range to Aiken,” owner Chuck Scott said.
Scott spent more than two years searching for an appropriate location for the new store and range.
The range itself is constructed of concrete wall dividers filled with concrete and reinforced with rebar. There are also range guards and video surveillance for security purposes.
Individual, family and corporate memberships will be available for the range, according to Scott. Guests can also pay an hourly rate to visit the range.
Safety equipment will be available for rent. The range will also have guns available for rent, so people can try out different firearms.
“See what you like best by comparison before you drop cold hard cash,” Scott said.
The Gun Rack will partner with local instructors to offer classes in the classroom space.
On its first day of business, The Gun Rack had three instructors make reservations for the classroom, which doesn't even have furniture in it yet, Scott said.
The entire facility will be available for rent for bachelor parties, birthday parties or other gatherings. Scott said they plan to offer other events, including ladies night and shooting leagues.
A concealed-carry permit is not required to shoot in the range; however, users must sign a disclaimer and also watch a six-minute safety video before entering the range.
Officers from the Aiken Department of Public Safety and the S.C. Highway Patrol were at the store and gun range for a test run on Sunday, and Scott said they plan to invite the Aiken County Sheriff's Office to the range sometime before the grand opening in August.
Scott said the shop has other events and promotions planned as the grand opening approaches.
The store is located at 1563 Edgefield Highway and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m.
