It only takes a moment to change everything.

“It's a real element that happens everyday,” Corey Paul of 180 Films said.

Paul had his moment more than 10 years ago.

This moment led him to create his first film – “Discover Zac Ryan.”

Dr. Zac Ryan (David Garrett) is a clinical research oncologist searching for a cure for cancer. When he meets his trial patient Eric (Jeff Joslin), Ryan gets more than he was expecting.

Shot partly in Aiken, “Discover Zac Ryan” will premiere this month at Cedar Creek Church.

“We are so excited to be hosting the world premiere of ‘Discover Zac Ryan,'” said Pastor Phillip Lee of Cedar Creek via video. “It's a phenomenal movie.”

People from Aiken appear in the film.

Paul is not the only filmmaker who has chosen the city for his movie.

A couple years ago, New Daydream Films visited Aiken for its movie “Waiting for Butterflies.”

New Daydream Films assisted Paul with his film.

This connection brought Paul here.

“Aiken is the perfect setting for any movie company looking for a beautiful, architecturally interesting city. Not to mention the people of Aiken – there are some very talented actors and actresses living right here,” said Elizabeth Harm, City tourism supervisor.

Story behind the film

“One choice could have changed everything,” Paul said.

Paul learned this after his mother told him a very personal story of hers.

For the last 10 years, her story fueled the creation of “Discover Zac Ryan.”

Paul wrote, produced and directed the film.

It took around six years to draft the script. It took a few months to form the cast. It took 18 days to film and around a year to edit.

On June 19, the cast and crew are inviting the public to their red-carpet premiere.

It will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 7 p.m.

The event will take place at Cedar Creek Church's Banks Mill campus, 3001 Banks Mill Road.

“It's going to be a lot of fun,” Paul said.

Those who attend will also be able to hear more about the process and story behind the film.

Film, Aiken

Paul conducted a nationwide-casting call.

As a result, actors from as far away as California appear in the film.

On-screen and off-screen are some local residents.

These residents include Tony Baughman and Chris Cady, who worked in the film's crew, and Carla Cloud and Matt Godson, who were featured in the film.

Godson was the last one to audition for Clayton, a patient of Ryans.

“He was perfect,” Paul said.

The majority of the 18-day filming took place in Aiken.

Locations that were used include Cedar Creek Church, Hopelands Gardens, Aiken Regional Medical Centers and LaDolce.

The rest of the filming occurred in North Carolina, where New Daydream Films is based.

Paul makes a cameo in the movie, according to the film's website.

More showings will occur on June 20 and 21 at Cedar Creek's Banks Mill campus.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free, but pre-registration is encouraged.

After Aiken, Paul plans to take his film debut to Texas, North Carolina, Arkansas, California and Ohio.

He would like to see “Discover Zac Ryan” make it to the big-screen, one day.
