The North Augusta Department of Public Safety is investigating a human skull that was found at a recycling center Tuesday.

The skull was found on a conveyer belt by an employee at the North Augusta Material Recovery Facility late Tuesday, according to Lt. Tim Thornton, a spokesman for North Augusta Public Safety.

“They came across what appeared to be a human skull and stopped the conveyer belt,” Thornton said. “We collected the skull, and we are in the process now of trying to work with other agencies to identify or find out more information about the remains.”

Thornton said there were no other body parts found nearby, and authorities do not suspect foul play.

“We don’t know if a crime’s been committed,” he said. “Because of the nature of the discovery, we’re looking into it.”
