Augusta wins four of five to end stretch

AUGUSTA — The Augusta GreenJackets (31-30) beat the Lexington Legends (26-37) in the final game of the series, on Sunday afternoon, at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The final score was 1-0.

Jake Smith, of North Augusta, earned his first win of the season as a GreenJacket. In three innings pitched, the relief pitcher for Chase Johnson, gave up one hit and struck out three. He now has an ERA of 2.06.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rando Moreno began the inning with a walk but advanced to third on a fielding error by Lexington starting pitcher, Luke Farrell. With two outs Tyler Horan reached base on a fielding error by Dominique Taylor, which allowed Moreno to plate the run.

Chase Johnson, Jake Smith and Luis Castillo pitched for a combined shutout.

On Saturday night the GreenJackets fell to the Legends in 10 innings by a 6-5 margin.

Friday night’s contest featured a comeback by the GreenJackets, who won 8-7. With the GreenJackets down four runs in the seventh inning, Jeremy Sy hit a grand slam to take the lead, 8-6.

Steven Messner earned the win for the GreenJackets. Smith earned his second save of the season.

Augusta defeated Lexington 9-6 to open the series on Thursday night, after beating the Rome Braves 12-8 on Wednesday.

The GreenJackets begin a weeklong road trip before the All-Star Break to Rome and Savannah.
