Letter: Retaining officers requires research
It would be very interesting to know the breakdown of demographics of police bookings, crime news in brief, and the police blotter in the Aiken Standard, including types of arrests, warrants, ages of detainees, number of officers handling cases, number of repeat arrests and court case loads.
Any other data pertinent to the complete discovery of crimes vs. manpower could be considered, including number of police officers used at schools, wellness checks, disturbing the peace, for example. This full detailed report would give the public a more informed record of work load our Department of Public Safety handles within the City and County. If we do not understand the problem, we cannot apply a solution. More personnel, better training, more pay. Aiken may not be growing, but the bookings are continual. Losing one third of our police force yearly demonstrates that they need better pay and possibly more police officers.
