The home of Starkey Flythe on Georgia Avenue was the site of a preview sale for Flythe’s estate sale, which will take place for the public on Friday and Saturday.

“We had to move merchandise, before we could have the rest of the sale,” Kathie Stallworth, estate sale coordinator, said. “Starkey was an eclectic collector and we’re all better for having known him, that’s for sure. I wanted his friends to come in and be able to see what he had.”

The house on Georgia Avenue, which was a part of the property that was the Palmetto Lodge, held a large collection of books, artwork and furniture.

“There’s a javelin; you don’t see those anymore,” Stallworth said. “There are two wicker chase chairs from The Forest Hills-Ricker Hotel, countless paintings and pieces of art. There are notables of different historical figures and nearly 30,000 books that the Book Tavern is working on pricing.”

The preview sale was open to friends of neighbors of Flythe, which allowed those closest to him to have a memento of the noted poet, fiction writer and teacher.

“We’re hoping and trying to honor Starkey,” Stallworth said. “He was such a wonderful person and always tried to do for others. This is a way to honor him and have his friends come see some of his beautiful things.”

During the public sales, there will be even more items than the preview sale.

“Next week the price range will go from 25 cents to $2,500 in merchandise,” Stallworth said. “Tonight, there’s not a lot of yard sale things because we didn’t have enough room. Many pieces will be out at the next sale because we’ve moved a lot of things.”

The public estate sale of Flythe’s will take place on Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 1220 Georgia Ave.
