Former Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jason L. Sheppard, who died in 2006 in the line of duty, will be honored next week when an Interstate 20 interchange will be renamed in his memory.
Sheppard died on Dec. 7, 2006, after he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at the scene of a fire at an industrial park.
The dedication comes after passage of a bill introduced in the Statehouse by S.C. Rep. Bill Taylor, R-Aiken.
The interchange, located at Exit 22 in Aiken, will be renamed “Deputy Sheriff Jason L. Sheppard Interchange,” and the honor will be celebrated during a ceremony on Friday, May 16, at 10 a.m. at Faith Riders Fellowship Church, located at 157 West Frontage Road, close to the interchange.
“Jason Sheppard dedicated his short life to serving the citizens of Aiken County,” said Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt. “I would like to thank everyone involved in the dedication of this overpass in his memory.”
The public is invited to attend.
