A motions hearing is expected today in the case of Stephon Carter, who is accused of killing an Aiken Public Safety officer in 2011.

The hearing will be at 10 a.m. in courtroom 4 of the Aiken County Judicial Center on Park Avenue.

Carter, 21, is charged with murder in the shooting death of Master Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson. Carter allegedly shot Richardson and another officer during a traffic stop on Dec. 20, 2011. The second officer suffered minor injuries, but Richardson died early the next morning.

Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty against Carter, who also faces charges of attempted murder, possession of a pistol with an obliterated serial number and unlawful carrying of a pistol.
