A home and vehicle received minor damage after a 4-year-old girl shifted her mother’s vehicle into gear as they were leaving the home, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Kershaw Drive, according to a sheriff’s report. The 29-year-old woman said she parked her vehicle in her mother’s driveway, left the keys in the ignition and went inside to get her children.

When she told her children it was time to go, the 4-year-old girl ran outside, got into the vehicle and managed to get the gear shifter into neutral, causing the vehicle to start rolling, the report stated. The vehicle rolled over a small bush, and the front of the vehicle struck the corner of the home, causing minimal damage.

The juvenile was not hurt, and officers did not believe it was a child neglect issue.

“It appears that the child got excited to go home and got outside before the victim and subject realized it,” the report stated.
