Sex offender jailed for public intoxication, failure to register
A sex offender was detained for public drunkenness and failure to register after he was seen walking intoxicated on a roadway, according to the North Augusta Department of Public Safety.
Bill Darrell McCarty, 59, of Burnside Avenue, was placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained on Tuesday morning.
An officer was patrolling the area near U.S. 1 and Martintown Road about 2:40 a.m. on Saturday when he noticed a man walking on the side of U.S. 1, according to an incident report. He made contact with the suspect, who was unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol.
The suspect, McCarty, had a laceration on his nose, and when asked about it, told the officer, “I’m drunk and I fell,” the report stated. He was charged with public drunkenness and taken into custody.
McCarty was also charged with failure to register as a sex offender, according to the detention center. He was convicted of indecent exposure in 2005.
According to the S.C. Sex Offender Registry, McCarty also has an out-of-state conviction for child molestation.
