On March 13, the Family Y of North Augusta hosted The Family Y Golf Classic at The River Club. The tournament, which featured 40 golfers, helps raise funds for the programs at the Y.

“This is our third tournament,” Catie McCauley, district vice president of Family YMCA of Greater Augusta, said. “This time every year, we do a community support fundraiser. It’s for the Family Y of North Augusta. It goes to support our scholarship program, so we don’t ever turn anybody away due to the inability to pay. Kids and families are able to participate in programs. The majority of our funds go to summer camp here at the North Augusta branch, our after school program, as well as the Livestrong Program, which is a cancer survivors program.”

Stephanie Angelo, a former Livestrong participant and current Livestrong instructor, gave her testimony on the program.

“The Livestrong program gave me a chance to exercise while going through treatment,” she said. “I was able to have energy and do things I wanted to do. This program helped me return to a normal life.”

Along with funding the Livestrong program, the tournament also helps support the after school program.

“The after school program is housed in our local schools,” McCauley said. “We have kids, usually 6 to 7 years old, who would get off the bus and be home alone, if it weren’t for the Y stepping in and providing scholarships. These are working families who need child care either after school or during the summer. The Y steps in and provides those services and scholarships.”

Through the help of volunteers, board members and sponsors, the Family Y of North Augusta was able to pull off the tournament on a cold, windy afternoon.

“We have a wonderful group of board members and volunteers that were eager to get the golf tournament started,” McCauley said. “We have a lot of sponsors and local businesses that help support it and sponsor holes. It was really a volunteer opportunity for our board and community support volunteers to all come together to enjoy the game of golf and raise some money. Mizzell Ford is our title sponsor for the tournament. They also provided a hole-in-one car for us, a Ford Escape. Then we have 18 hole sponsors, that range from local businesses to local donations to help support the golf tournament. A lot of support made this event happen.”
