A new restaurant is opening in downtown Aiken this week. Catch 231, a seafood establishment, will make its debut on Thursday in The Alley.
Catch 231 will provide “a more elegant way to experience South Carolina seafood cuisine,” said Philip Jordan on Sunday afternoon. “We'll have some classic dishes with a more modern twist.”
Jordan, a local chiropractor, will own and manage the restaurant in partnership with his brother, Jeff Jordan, and Janice Rodriguez. The same team owns and manages Up Your Alley Chop House, which is right across the street from Catch 231. The new restaurant's location is the former site of Papa Russ's BBQ, Catering by Jennifer and Soiree.
“We will let the flavor of our food be the shining star at Catch 231,” said Philip. “When you have good fresh seafood, you don't need to put a lot of different kinds of spices on it.”
Items on Catch 231's menu will include crab meat-stuffed flounder with cream sauce, lobster macaroni and cheese served in an iron skillet, she-crab bisque, crab cakes and a deconstructed Low Country boil. Among the other options for diners will be fresh fish specials, little neck clams and goat cheese fritters made three different ways, with shrimp, crab or lobster.
“There will be Cajun and Creole twists to some of our dishes,” Jeff Jordan said.
Catch 231 will get much of its seafood from the Beaufort area and will feature produce grown within 20 miles of Aiken.
According to Philip Jordan, he and his partners decided to open a seafood restaurant for a couple of reasons.
“We sell almost as much seafood at the Chop House as we do our hand-cut steaks,” he said. “Then, when we found out the location nearby was going to be available, we quietly asked our customers what kind of new restaurant they would like to see in The Alley, and the answer was always seafood.”
Chop House veteran Keith Herron will be the executive chef at Catch 231 and the Chop House. He also will serve as the head chef at Catch 231, which will have around 15 employees. Carmelo Figueroa, who has worked in Atlanta, Charleston and Charlotte, will be the Chop House's new head chef.
Catch 231's address is 231 The Alley. It will be open from 5 to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The restaurant's phone number is 803-226-0525.
“We probably will serve brunch on special occasions like Mother's Day and Father's Day,” Philip said. “We'll also be available for parties on Sunday and catering.”
Catch 231 will have a full-service bar and an extensive wine list.
“We'll be serving a lot of frozen drinks on our patio,” Philip said.
