Struggling with prayer, I began to give thanks for the members of my family and for other persons whose names came to mind. As I called each name in gratitude, I found myself also praying specifically for each one and asking God to bless them. I continue to discover that giving thanks is a good place to start in prayer because gratefulness opens our hearts and enables us to focus more clearly. In fact, thankfulness is always an excellent way to start anything. “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (I Thessalonians 5: 18).
