Oyster roast to benefit students

  • Thursday, March 6, 2014

The North Augusta Junior Women’s League is on a mission to support childrens’ needs in schools.

The group is hoping to raise funds through its third annual “Roasting on the River” oyster roast on March 15 from 6 until 9 p.m. at Boeckh Park in Hammond’s Ferry.

“When we first started this, oyster roasts weren’t really common in the area,” Cindy Huckaby, public relations chair for the North Augusta Junior Women’s League, said. “This event has gotten bigger each year. Last year we raised $2,500 this year we’re hoping to raise $3,500 or more.”

Along with all-you-can eat oysters, there will be a raffle, silent auctions, a cash bar and live entertainment.

“This year we’ll have tickets to Dollywood, a mattress set and nights at Hilton Head to offer,” Huckaby said. “We’ll have all-you-can eat oysters and two cocktails included in the ticket price. We’ll also have Riverside Smoke BBQ and a cash bar available. Shinebox, a local band who plays around the CSRA, will provide entertainment for us.”

The money raised at “Roasting on the River” goes back to the schools of North Augusta. In past years the money went strictly to elementary schools, but, this year, the field has been expanded to include middle schools.

“We see a need, being in touch with counselors, and help children,” Huckaby said. “This year, for the first time, we’ve included middle schools. We’re excited to include the new schools.”

Tickets for “Roasting on the River” are sold out. They were on sale for $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
