An Aiken man said he shot a person who was trying to break into his home early on Wednesday, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened just after midnight at a home on Edisto Avenue, according to a sheriff’s report. The 76-year-old homeowner said he heard someone shatter a window on the front of his home. He went downstairs and saw someone reaching through the broken front window and trying to unlock the door.

The homeowner told officers he got his gun and fired a shot from his .357 magnum revolver at the suspect, the report stated. He believes he shot the suspect in the right hand because he saw the suspect’s right hand bleeding.

The homeowner saw the driver’s side door of his vehicle open and the window also shattered, police said. He didn’t see any items missing.

Blood was found on the inside of the vehicle, the report stated. Officers from the Sheriff’s Office and Aiken Public Safety searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.
