A Saluda man was detained on multiple drug charges after fleeing police when they pulled him over in downtown Aiken, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

Brian Christopher Bibbs, 25, of Silver Drive in Saluda, was charged with possession of marijuana-second offense, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a controlled substance and failure to comply. He was placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained on Monday morning.

An officer followed a black SUV as it traveled south on Newberry Street across Park Avenue, then made a U-turn and traveled back north down Newberry Street, then pulled into a parking space across from Pizza Joint, the report stated. The officer activated his blue lights to stop the vehicle for suspicious activity.

The driver, identified as Bibbs, smelled of alcohol, and fled on foot when asked to exit the vehicle, police said. Other officers located Bibbs hiding behind St. John’s United Methodist Church by an enclosed air conditioning unit.

The officers located cocaine and marijuana on Bibbs, as well as some “within his span of control,” the report stated. They also found a blue pill in the cup holder of the vehicle.
