Man jailed on fire charges
An Aiken man was jailed on multiple charges after he set fire to a pile of yard debris in the River Bluff Subdivision, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
William Prescott Mhyre, 23, of Greenwich Drive, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and burning of crops, fuel or lumber. He was placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained on Tuesday afternoon.
Aiken Public Safety responded to a brush fire on Greenwich Drive about 10:30 p.m. on Monday and found that the fire had been extinguished, according to a report. A resident said she saw a suspect set fire to a pile of yard debris and take off running.
Officers eventually found the suspect, Mhyre, trying to leave a home on Greenwich Drive in a minivan, police said. He appeared to be “very intoxicated” and under the influence of some type of narcotics.
While searching Mhyre, officers found a small piece of straw with a white powder substance in it, as well as a broken student ID card, the report stated. Mhyre told them he had taken half a Xanax.
After being placed into a patrol car, Mhyre allegedly spit on the vehicle’s computer and dash board, police said.
