A Wagener man has been detained for homicide by child abuse after an infant died Sunday as a result of a traumatic brain injury, according to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
Leon Marquis Davis, 34, was charged with homicide by child abuse and multiple counts of failure to pay child support. He was placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained on Monday afternoon.
Deputies and EMS received a 911 call from Davis about 9 a.m. Sunday and found a male child to be unresponsive, according to Capt. Eric Abdullah. The child was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
Abdullah said investigators were called to the hospital because the child had injuries that were consistent with child abuse. Davis was arrested at the hospital.
The child was pronounced dead at Georgia Regents University Medical Center's Pediatric ICU on Sunday at 10:02 a.m.
Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said that the child was discovered to have “incurred a significant brain injury,” and an autopsy conducted today confirmed that the cause was due to blunt force trauma.
The case remains under investigation.
