A man was transported to an area hospital Friday after he apparently shot himself in the face following a vehicle pursuit on I-20, according to authorities.

Capt. Eric Abdullah with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle pursuit began in Lexington County with authorities chasing a vehicle driven by a white male who had been involved in a “disturbance.” The incident began at approximately 9:46 p.m.

During the pursuit, Lexington County officials requested the assistance of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The chase ended on I-20 westbound at mile marker 16 in Aiken County.

“The vehicle ran over a couple of stop sticks deployed by us and that’s when he got on I-20 and pulled into the right shoulder,” Abdullah said. “Deputies were giving him demands there on the scene and that’s when deputies heard a gunshot.”

Abdullah said the suspect had threatened to kill himself.

The male suspect has not been identified and his condition is not known.
