AIKEN, SC – Howard Raymond McKendricK, Col. USAF Ret., 94, beloved husband of Margaret Virginia “Peg” McKendrick, died Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
A native of Wilmington, DE, Mr. McKendrick was a son of the late Walter Bamford and Maude Nelson Asquith McKendrick. He attended the University of Delaware before being called into service in World War II. Mr. McKendrick had a distinguished 30 year career in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Colonel. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was proud to have been flying over Tokyo Bay as Japan surrendered below, onboard the USS Missouri to end the war. He served two tours in Vietnam, and retired from the Air Force following his last assignment at The Pentagon in 1972. He had lived in Aiken since his retirement.
Surviving is his wife of 73 years, Peg; a daughter, Patricia McKendrick Wright (Mike), Florence, SC; 2 granddaughters, Andrea Weber Cornelison, Chapin, SC, Megan Ellen Greenwald (Brian), Ashburn, VA; 3 great-grandchildren, Clayton Michael Cornelison, Claire Ellen Cornelison and Nathan Ross Greenwald.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 10:30 AM at Cumberlain Village. The family will receive friends following the service.
