Alpha returns in the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida

The 2012 Aiken Trained Horse of the Year Godolphin Racing’s Alpha made his 5-year-old and turf debut Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

The multiple Grade 1 winning millionaire placed fifth in the 1 3/8-mile, $200,000, Grade 2 Mac Diarmida Stakes, beaten 3 1/2-lengths.

Alpha was broken and trained in Aiken by Tim Jones.

The 5-year-old horse is conditioned at the racetrack by Kiaran McLaughlin, and was ridden Saturday by Joel Rosario. Alpha had last raced during his 4-year-old campaign, finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap on Nov. 30. Alpha won the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes over an off track at Saratoga Race Course on Aug. 31.

Alpha has 6 wins and 2 seconds from 20 career starts, and has earned $1,802,667.
