An winter storm is expected to paralyze the Aiken area.
“The main issue is going to be freezing rain, and we believe there will be damaging ice accumulation; the most likely amount will be around 1 inch,” said Jeff Linton, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in Columbia, on Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service is predicting that the rain is scheduled to fall throughout the day will change predominantly to freezing rain late this evening around midnight.
“The bulk of the ice accumulation will occur on Wednesday,” Linton said.
The Weather Channel is reporting that the low temperature overnight will be 30 degrees. The high tomorrow will be 32 degrees. There will be winds from the northeast on Wednesday of 19 miles per hour.
“When you get about a quarter of an inch of ice, that's when the damage starts to occur,” Linton said. “When you get an inch, there probably will be many cases of broken tree limbs and some of those limbs will fall on power lines. There well may be a lot of power outages that will be long-lasting.
A winter storm warning will be in effect from 7 p.m. tonight until noon on Thursday.
