Cops: Couple jailed after fight over cigarettes
An Aiken County couple was detained for criminal domestic violence on Thursday after a fight over cigarettes, during which the woman allegedly stabbed her boyfriend, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
James Butler III, 29, of Union Church Lane, was charged with criminal domestic violence.
Angel Marie Johnson, 21, of Bill Circle in Graniteville, was charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. They were placed in the Aiken County detention center, where they remained on Friday afternoon.
The incident happened at a home on Union Church Lane in Aiken just before 9 p.m. on Thursday, according to a sheriff’s report.
Butler told officers he took a pack of cigarettes from his girlfriend, Johnson, and tried to leave. She tried to keep him from leaving, and he hit her, according to the report. Butler said Johnson then stabbed him in the left shoulder, police said.
Paramedics on the scene “cleared” Butler, who said he did not want to pursue charges against Johnson.
Johnson told officers she and Butler got into a fight over a pack of cigarettes, the report stated. As they were arguing, Butler began striking her in the face, so she pulled a knife from her purse and stabbed him in the left shoulder, according to the report.
Officers saw a stab wound on Butler’s shoulder, and two cuts on Johnson’s face, according to the report. Investigators determined Butler and Johnson were both “capable of being the aggressor.”
