An Aiken man who was allegedly drunk when he crashed his car Wednesday tried to flee the scene with a case of beer in his hand, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

Ian Michael Bowles, 30, of Henry Street, was charged with DUI and placed in the Aiken County detention center, but had been released as of Thursday afternoon.

Aiken Public Safety responded to a single-car accident at the intersection of Two Notch Road and Henry Street just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to a report. The driver, Bowles, was found walking away from the scene with a case of Coors Light beer.

The driver, Bowles, smelled strongly of alcohol and exhibited multiple signs of intoxication. He told police he was traveling home from a party.

“Bowles stated he was walking home from the accident,” the report stated. There were footprints on the ground leading from the vehicle to where Bowles was in the freshly fallen snow.

Bowles refused to submit to field sobriety testing and was charged with DUI. He also refused to provide a breath sample.
