The North Augusta girls basketball team is on a mission during the region portion of their schedule.

The Jackets (7-9, 2-0 Region 5 4A) have gotten off to a hot start, defeating Lexington and White Knoll during the week. They defeated Lexington 61-36 and White Knoll 53-42.

“It’s just all out effort,” Crystal Cummings, North Augusta’s head coach, said. “The bench has stepped up and we’ve stopped with our up-and-down starts. We used to start strong, fall off and then try to come back. We’ve changed that in the region.”

Mallory Stone has led the Jackets in scoring so far this year and put up 26 points against White Knoll, but a surprising third option has shown up in region play.

“Our defense has been good all year and our offense has been much improved,” Cummings said. “Alexus Williams has stepped up as a third scorer for us, kind of out of the blue, to help out Mallory. I love the effort Williams has brought.”

The goal of the Jackets all season has been to win the region and the “dress rehearsal” is over, according to Cummings.

“The dress rehearsal games are done and the Cross Creek game really helped us get focused,” she said. “I think they know the region is a new season, they know that in S.C. the region is what’s important. They want to win the region as much as I do.”

North Augusta has improved on the practice floor, which has led to the dominating effort in region play.

“They have been working hard in practice and it’s translated to games,” Cummings said. “We’re 2-0 now and we’ve been playing pretty well. Aside from the fourth quarter at White Knoll, we’ve been scoring 14-16 points a quarter in region play. Our practice motto has been ‘How you do anything is how you do everything,’ and I think that’s stuck with them.”

The Jackets will next be in action in a game that was to have happened on Tuesday against South Aiken. They will then go to Aiken on Friday.
