Results of autopsies confirm murder-suicide in North Augusta
NORTH AUGUSTA — Autopsies performed on Monday in Newberry confirmed that a father and son died from gunshot wounds in a murder-suicide, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. The shooting incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at a home on Woodvine Drive in the Windtree subdivision of North Augusta.
Carlton reported that Samuel Hewlett, 52, died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Hewlett’s son, Brandon Hewlett, 21, died from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.
“Samuel Hewlett’s death is to be ruled a suicide, and Brandon Hewlett’s death is to be ruled as death by homicide,” Carlton wrote in an email. “The elder Hewlett took the life of his son.”
Aiken County authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting. The family’s mother wasn’t at home when it happened. She found the bodies of her husband and son when she returned to the house, Carlton said.
