Mrs. Barbara Luton Phifer

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC – Funeral Services for Mrs. Barbara Luton Phifer, 54, who was called home to her Shepherd surrounded by her family, January 10, 2014, will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock from Grace United Methodist Church. Rev. James D. Dennis, Jr. officiating. Interment in Pineview Memorial Park.
Mrs. Phifer was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on November 20, 1959 to Jim and Norma Luton. She graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1982. After graduation, she was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant. In 1983 she married the love of her life, Mark Phifer, and moved to North Augusta. She was employed by Cranston, Robertson, and Whitehurst as an engineer until 1990, when she became a mother. Since then, she has volunteered her service, talents, and gifts in the public schools, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Crew, Aiken Civic Ballet, Bulls Soccer Club, and Grace United Methodist Church. In 2000, Barbara was employed by the Grace United Methodist Church Child Development Center as the Science Teacher. A piece of her heart could always be found in her teaching young children about God’s creation. Barbara was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class at Grace United Methodist Church for 30 years.
Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Mark A. Phifer; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Andrew and Rachael Phifer, Aiken and Benjamin Phifer, North Augusta; a daughter, Rebecca Phifer, North Augusta; her parents, Jim and Norma Luton, Oak Ridge, Tennessee; a sister and her husband, Karen and Wayne Yeager, Lexington, Kentucky; her brother and his wife and children, Alan and Karen Luton, Ashley, Brandon and Ella, all of La Plata, Maryland; a brother, Neil Luton, Cartersville, Georgia; her mother-in-law, Barbara Q. Phifer, a brother-in-law, Steve Phifer and a nephew, Sam Phifer, all of Rocky Mount, Virginia.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 until 8.
Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Grace United Methodist Church Child Development Center, 639 Georgia Avenue, North Augusta, SC 29841 or to the Ngozi International Foundation, Inc., 123 Kenilworth Drive, North Augusta, SC 29860.
The family wish to express sincere thanks to Dr. Mark Keaton and his staff at Augusta Oncology Associates for their kind and professional treatment of Barbara for over three years.
