A woman has died and two were injured in a vehicle accident that occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in the area of Dixie Clay Road and Flint Drive in Beech Island today.

Helen Reid, 18, of Evans, Ga. was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after she was ejected from the vehicle, according Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. She was not wearing a seat belt, he said.

Austin Beard, 20, of North Augusta, was driving at the time of the accident and was transported Georgia Regents Medical Center's Trauma Center, Carlton said.

Another passenger, whose name was not released, was also transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown, but both were "severely injured," Carlton stated in an email. Both were wearing seat belts, according to Highway Patrol.

Highway Patrol stated that the vehicle, a 2004 Jeep Cherokee, was headed west on Dixie Clay Road when it ran off the road to the right side, lost control and struck an embankment. The vehicle then drove into the woods. Carlton stated in his email that they were traveling at a "high rate of speed."

The accident is still under investigation.

This is the first traffic fatality in Aiken County in 2014.
