Letter: Mandela should be remembered

A giant has fallen. We recently lost the great leader, civil rights advocate, Nobel laureate, and former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.

He has always been especially close to the hearts of all NAACP members. His work to peacefully end apartheid in South Africa was closely linked to the civil rights struggle in America, he employed many of the same tactics and strategies the NAACP used, even using many of our freedom songs. We are so fortunate to have lived in his time and to know that such a man truly existed.

We mourn with the world his passing and send up prayers for his family, and the nation he led to freedom

A giant has fallen.

Philip C. Howell

President, Aiken County Branch NAACP
