Mossy Creek fifth-graders just completed 10 weeks of D.A.R.E. with Officer Tom Rogers. The graduation ceremony was Nov. 15 at Belvedere First Baptist Church. Each student who graduated was required to write an essay describing what they learned in D.A.R.E. There were four essay winners. The winners were Shelby Davis, Emma Whitaker, Vivica Birt and Iverson McKie. They got to read their essays during the D.A.R.E. graduation. The school also had a special speaker from the North Augusta Department of Public Safety, Sgt. Aaron Fittery. Here are what a few fifth-graders had to say about this special day:

Megan Trent: “D.A.R.E. graduation was a fun time to spend with friends. We ate Wife Saver in the church fellowship hall. It was good to have lunch together away from school. Then we went into the church and waited for everything to start. When they called my name to get my certificate, I shook all the teacher’s hands, then got handed a bracelet, too.”

Harper James: “D.A.R.E. graduation was fun. I learned a lot in D.A.R.E. I never knew it would feel so good to go on a stage to get a sheet of paper. A sheet of paper that shows you will be drug and violence free. I wasn’t one of the D.A.R.E. essay winners, but I know how it feels to be proud of yourself.”

Tyreek Jennings: “D.A.R.E. has helped me throughout the 10-week process. Some things I learned are communication, effective listening, consequences, the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model and to say no to drugs. I couldn’t have learned all that without Officer Tom Rogers. He inspired me not to do drugs the day we started this program. If anyone asks me to smoke, I’ll give them a reason why not. When I graduated from D.A.R.E, I knew that all my hard work had paid off.”
