Silver Bluff Bulldogs advance to lower state title game
SILVER BLUFF 35, WOODLAND 12
PETTICOAT JUNCTION — The Silver Bluff Bulldogs paired a bruising rushing attack with an airtight defense to roll over visiting Woodland, 35-12, in Friday night’s Class AA, Division II third round playoff game.
The Bulldogs (11-1) racked up 417 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, allowing them to dictate the tempo throughout the game.
“Our offensive line did a great job,” said Silver Bluff head coach Al Lown. “We made some good runs, but once again, the strength of our team is the offensive line and they showed it tonight.”
Lown credited his team’s ability to overcome adversity in the win, which advances his team to the Lower State championship. The Bulldogs saw a long touchdown run by RJ Stallings called back due to a penalty, and also lost two fumbles as well as leading rusher Shaquez Wright to injury.
“A lot of kids stepped up big tonight,” Lown said. “DeAngilo Drayton in particular.”
Drayton led Silver Bluff’s explosive rushing attack with 162 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Myles Corbitt (14 carries for 128 yards and a score) also eclipsed the century mark, while Stallings (10 carries for 99 yards) narrowly missed. Thanks to those three, the Bulldogs’ ground game didn’t miss a beat even without Wright.
“He’ll hopefully be back next week,” said Lown. “He got his bell rung. He looks alright right now.”
The Bulldogs wasted little time taking the lead Friday; Corbitt’s 6-yard touchdown run capped their opening drive just under two minutes into the game. Silver Bluff never looked back from there, eventually stretching the lead to 28-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
The tremendous improvement Lown has seen from his defense over the last several weeks was again on display Friday, as the Bulldogs limited the Wolverines (10-2) to only 21 yards of total offense in the first half and 209 for the game.
“We’re not the most talented over there, but we get after it pretty good,” Lown said.
Silver Bluff harassed Woodland dual-threat quarterback Drake Knight throughout the game, limiting him to 135 total yards. Lown said that facing several similar, talented quarterbacks throughout the season helped his team get ready for Knight.
“We faced a lot of tough quarterbacks this year. (Midland Valley’s Daniel) Carr, (Strom Thurmond’s Jauveer) Hammond and (Edisto’s Tyrell) Maxwell; we’ve faced a lot of good quarterbacks, and I think that prepared us tonight.”
The Bulldogs, winners of 10 straight games overall, stretched their home winning streak to eight games with the win. Next week, Silver Bluff will have the opportunity to add one more to its total when Bamberg-Ehrhardt comes to town for the Class AA, Division II Lower State championship.
Silver Bluff won its Region 5-AA opener on Oct. 4 against the Red Raiders, but Lown quickly pointed out that Bamberg-Ehrhardt’s quarterback had just returned from an injury that kept him out for several weeks; the Red Raiders (7-5) haven’t lost since.
“I know that they’ll be better,” Lown said. “And it will be a heck of a game.”
