PETTICOAT JUNCTION — The Silver Bluff rivalry with Barnwell in football hasn’t gone Barnwell’s way often in recent years. The Bulldogs (10-1) continued their dominance of the Warhorses (3-9) on Friday night with a 28-0 win in the second round of the Class AA Division II playoffs. Barnwell’s last victory in the series came in 2007.

Friday’s win had a familiar feel to the last time the two teams met in the regular season finale. In that game, Silver Bluff ran the ball at will on its way to a blowout, and this time the rushing attack was the key for head coach Al Lown’s team again.

“Early on we knew how tough they were inside physically, so we went to some of our empty backfield packages and pitched it and tried to get outside, Lown said. “We were able to do that and get up early, and played pretty efficiently the rest of the game.

Shaquez Wright carried most of the load for the Bulldogs. He finished the game with 193 rushing yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdown, Wright got the scoring started for the Bulldogs with a nine-yard touchdown run to cap Silver Bluff’s opening drive. Barnwell gave Silver Bluff a short field after failing to recover an onside kickoff attempt on the opening drive.

From that point on, the Bulldogs capitalized on some of the mistakes Barnwell made. The Warhorses fumbled the ball three times and threw an interception also in the game.

However, the miscues weren’t limited to just the visiting team. Silver Bluff fumbled the ball a few times and lost one late in the game on the Barnwell 1-yard line. Lown attributed the sloppy play to the pressure Barnwell applied throughout the game.

“A lot of it had to do with their defense. (Charles Williams) put pressure on us up the middle, Lown said. “Give credit to Barnwell. They played hard, and we knew they would because they played hard against us last time.”

The Warhorses season came to an end with the loss. Head coach Eddie Moore said the loss came down to the turnover margin. “We couldn’t tackle very well, which led to big plays for them,” Moore said. “We turned the ball over, and they put the ball on the ground several times and we never could get on it. That’s a good team over there, and they got a lot of seniors. They should go a long way.”

Next week, Silver Bluff will welcome Woodland, who topped Kingstree 28-6. Lown wants to see more of the same from his team next week. “Defensively we played really good tonight, and I hope that carries over, he said. “I was pleased with what we did offensively tonight, so we’re in good shape I think.”
