In his Oct. 30 column, “Hey, Republican Party: Put on your happy face,” Cal Thomas misquotes the late President Kennedy to say something very different than what the president said.
Here’s Thomas, quoting Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for yourself.” Here’s what President Kennedy actually said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” President Kennedy was disparaging selfish individualism and praising patriotism. Thomas’ version ignores the call to patriotism and praises selfish individualism.
