A fractured pelvis couldn’t stop Gabriel Charles from realizing his destiny.

The 3-year-old son of Street Hero, broken and trained at Dr. Doris Tummillo’s Palmetto Thoroughbred Training Center, returns today in the 1 1/8-mile, $150.000, Grade 2 Twlight Derby on the turf at Santa Anita Park.

The colt captured the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Preview Stakes as a 2-year-old, but it was his last start in the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby that was more than convincing, winning the 1 1/8-mile race by 1 1/4 lenghts this summer at Del Mar.

The OBS Sales graduate is conditioned by Jeff Mullins, will break from post position no. 12 in the 13 horse field, and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith has the return call.

Gabriel Charles last worked on Oct. 26 at Santa Anita Park, breezing 5-furlongs in 1:01.
