Aiken boasts a powerful contingent of runners for this year’s Breeders’ Cup races at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. on Nov. 1-2.


Much of the attention will be focused on Dogwood Stable’s Palace Malice, who will contest the 1¼-mile. $5 million, Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, with the 3-year-old male division championship on the line. However, there are several other Aiken horses that merit watching.


Palace Malice

Owner: Dogwood Stable

• Palace Malice will definitely be the apple of every Aiken resident’s eye on Nov. 2. The winner of the 145th Belmont Stakes, Palace Malice is a son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin. He placed second in his last start, the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and is a two-time graded stakes winner. Palace Malice was trained in Aiken by Brad Stauffer and is conditioned by five-time Eclipse Award winner Todd Pletcher.


Dance to Bristol

Owner: Susan Wantz


Race: Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint


Earnings: $980,880


• Dance to Bristol is currently trained by Ollie Figgins III but was broken and trained in Aiken by Tim and Cary Frommer. Dance to Bristol won the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga Race Course this summer – a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race – earning her an automatic berth to this weekend. The 4-year-old daughter of the 2004 Eclipse Award winning sprinter, Speightstown, won seven consecutive races during her 4-year-old campaign, including five stakes in succession, and has 10 wins and 8 seconds, from 19 starts.


Dancing House

Owner: Godolphin Racing LLC


Race: Juvenile Fillies or Juvenile Fillies Turf


Earnings: $98,000


• Dancing House, a 2-year-old daughter of Grade 1 winner Tapit, will make her next start in either the Juvenile Fillies or Juvenile Fillies Turf. The gray filly has placed third in her last two starts, the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga Race Course and the Grade 3 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont Park. Dancing House was broken and trained in Aiken by Tim Jones, and is trained at the racetrack by Kiaran McLaughlin.


Sky Painter

Owner: Darley Stable


Race: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies


Earnings: $88,000


• Sky Painter, a homebred, just missed in her last start. She finished second by a nose to Testa Rossi in the Miss Grillo Stakes. Tim Jones broke and trained the daughter of Street Cry, and McLaughlin conditions the dark bay filly at the racetrack.


Alpha

Owner: Godolphin Racing LLC


Race: Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile


Earnings: $1,779,167


• The 2012 Aiken Trained Horse of the Year, will also be among the entries in this year’s Breeders’ Cup. Alpha, a winner of the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes this summer at Saratoga, is the son of Bernardini. The diminutive 4-year-old colt was broken and trained in Aiken by Tim Jones, and is trained at the racetrack by McLaughlin.


Dance Card

• Dance Card is part of the Aiken trained quartet. The 4-year-old filly, broken and trained by Tim Jones, won the Grade 1 Gazelle Stakes during her sophomore campaign, and returned to the races after a 10-month layoff, finishing third in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap. The daughter of Tapit is trained by McLaughlin has four wins, a second and a third.
