Aiken Bridge tournament director enjoys challenge, travel perks
Being a professional tournament director for the American Contract Bridge League has its perks. Alan Brooks travels to Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head and other popular vacation sites. The 79-year-old Aiken resident also goes on luxury cruises through the Panama Canal and to various exotic ports while overseeing card games.
Arris’ Grill closes its doors after more than 60 years
Arris’ Grill, which has been serving customers in Aiken in one form or another for 60-plus years, closed its doors Oct. 3.
The decision was made last week, according to Malcolm “Dean” Jolly Jr., whose father bought the business from George Karapatakis approximately 25 years ago. Upon Malcolm Jolly Sr.’s passing in 1990, Dean’s mother, Vivian, took over the restaurant.
Arris’ namesake was apparently Arris Karapatakis, George’s brother.
270 Wackenhut security employees furloughed at SRS
Wackenhut Services Incorporated, the security contractors at the Savannah River Site, announced it is furloughing 270 employees from its workforce beginning today.
The furloughs will run through next week.
“The Department of Energy directed the company to ramp down operations to perform only those activities necessary to protect DOE security interests at the site based on the current reduction of site operations,” said Bill Taylor, public information officer with DOE-SRS.
Oktoberfest brings culture, fun to downtown Aiken
The Alley in downtown Aiken was transformed into a little piece of Germany as residents enjoyed the inaugural Oktoberfest on Saturday evening.
Attendees lined up for a glass of cold German beer or wine and dug into some Bavarian-style food while listening to local musicians play throughout the evening. Yodeling contests and beer stein races were also part of Aiken’s Oktoberfest.
Tea Party rally draws out candidates’ views
While organizers were setting up for the Aiken County Tea Party rally in The Alley on Saturday morning, Chairman Dr. Mike Vasovski noticed a pedestrian watching them while shaking his head in a disapproving manner.
Vasovski noted his observation during the rally, stating there’s nothing “sinister” about the Tea Party, and they’re the simply the voice of the Conservative people.
