Joseph Whitesides Newell
AIKEN, SC – Joseph W. Newell, 83, died September 26, 2013.
Joseph was born in Goshen, IN, March 8, 1930, to Ned and Helene Whitesides Newell. He graduated from Goshen High School in 1948 and was well known in Goshen for his high school accomplishments in track and basketball.
He graduated in 1952 from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. While working for Wayne Knitting Mills, he attended the executive education business leadership program at Harvard Business School. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.
He married Ann Dungan of Franklin, IN, Aug. 23, 1952. Joe served in the US Army in the Counterintelligence Corps.
He retired as president of Wayne Gossard Corp., New York, NY in 1987, moving to Hilton Head, SC, where he lived for many years. He was an avid golfer and was a member of Hilton Head Plantation Country Club.
He and Ann then moved to Aiken and enjoyed southern living for many years. Joe was well known for his cottage industry, Plantation Designs, which he started in Hilton Head after his retirement. His beautiful, handcrafted frames and trays were sought after in many gift shops and boutiques.
Joe is survived by his widow, Ann; son, Jeffrey (Cynthia) Newell, Charlotte, NC; daughter, Cynthia (Michael) Ebert, Tampa, FL; granddaughters, Meagan and Jillian Newell and twins, Jonathan and Lauren Ebert; two brothers, David (Allene) Newell, Goshen, IN, and Robert (Patricia) Newell, Fort Wayne, IN; and many nieces and nephews.
A family celebration of life will take place in Aiken in mid October with interment at Violett Cemetery in Goshen, IN at a later date.
