Man suspected in Travelers Rest shooting dies

TRAVELERS REST (AP) — A man accused of shooting his 31-year-old girlfriend to death at her Travelers Rest home has died.

Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans said 32-year-old Larry Steve Howard died on Tuesday in the intensive care unit at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Deputies had obtained warrants charging Howard with murder in the death of Tracie Lynn Gilbert. She was found was found shot to death on Sunday afternoon at the home she shared with her father.

Deputies found Howard under a bed. Authorities said he struggled with deputies after trying to grab a shotgun from them and was taken to the hospital after becoming unconscious.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused Howard’s death. Evans said an autopsy would be performed later on Tuesday.
