Letter: Columnist needs more research

Cal Thomas uses one data point to “prove” that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the scientific community. Oddly, he tries to use the data that they openly provided to make his case.

I’d like to share some relevant data. The Minimum Sea Ice Extent, also known as MSIE, in 2013 was indeed larger than in 2012, which was the smallest on record.

Fluctuations from year to year are normal. It’s the trend that’s important, and the Minimum Sea Ice Extent in 2013 was smaller than any year prior to 2007, the sixth smallest on record, and significantly less than any measurement before 2000.

Most political columnists are not worth paying attention to, especially when they pretend to be scientists.
