A 5K will be held on Saturday to benefit a North Augusta man who was brutally beaten on the Riverwalk in Augusta in May.
The Wesley Spires 5K Run and Walk will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, at the Riverview Park Activities Center in North Augusta and will take place on the North Augusta Greeneway Trail. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in both the run and the walk.
Registration for the walk and race is $20 for each participant. Raceday registration will be allowed.
A Facebook event for the race had more than 70 participants as of Thursday afternoon.
Spires and his girlfriend Ashley Solesbee were attacked while on a date at the Augusta Riverwalk on the night of May 3. Two men approached them on the Riverwalk, demanded money and then assaulted them with a metal bat or pipe.
Solsebee suffered five facial fractures and a laceration on her head. Spires had a skull fracture and bleeding to the brain. Following the attack, the pair made it to Spires’ truck and he drove them to University Hospital.
Two men, Kevin Richardson and Robey Moses, have been arrested in connection with the attack and charged with two counts each of aggravated assault and robbery by force.
