Traffic light to be working soon near new Sam's Club

A new traffic signal could go live as early as next week on Jefferson Davis Highway in front of the new Sam's Club.

The traffic light, which is approximately a quarter mile from another signal located at the corner of Richland Avenue and Hitchcock Parkway, has been installed in front of the new business. The traffic signal will assist in handling the influx in traffic generated by the large retailer, said Ems Baskin, S.C. Department of Transportation District Traffic Engineer.

According to a traffic study, Sam's Club, its gas station and outparcels, will generate approximately 8,000 new trips daily in the area.

The placement of a traffic light was proposed for in front of the retailer's driveway located off Jefferson Davis Highway.

Baskin said the light could be switched on by the end of next week.

When the light is turned on, there will be a “flashing period” of three to seven days in which the light will flash yellow to get drivers who frequently use that road accustomed to having a traffic signal at that location.

“We know it's new to everyone and hope it helps everyone leaving and entering the business,” Baskin said.

Crews are still doing some road work in the vicinity of the store, so drive with caution and expect minor delays.

The Aiken Sam's Club is approximately 136,000 square feet and is complete with a pharmacy, photo center, fresh produce section and an optical department as well as delivery and installation services. A gas station is also on site.

Sam's Club is scheduled to open on Oct. 3 and is located at 220 U.S. Highway 1, near the Robert M. Bell Parkway.
