The Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons will hold volunteer training beginning next week.

The training will be Sept. 18 through 21, and from Sept. 23 through 25 at the Cumbee Center, 135 Lancaster St. The training is no cost to participants, and potential volunteers must be at least 18 years old and submit to a criminal background check.

Cumbee Center staff and experts on domestic violence and sexual assault from around the community will prepare potential volunteers to assist victims of sexual assault and domestic violence and their families, said Barbara Sanders, a spokeswoman for the Cumbee Center.

The training will include speakers from the court system and local law enforcement.

The center needs volunteers willing to work where needed at the office or shelter and cover after-hour calls where they might be needed to talk with victims in the hospital emergency room.

In addition to the background check, all prospective volunteers are required to complete a volunteer application and a statement of confidentiality.

For more information, call Sanders at 803-649-0480.
