STROM THURMOND 28, SALUDA 17

SALUDA — The first time that the Saluda and Strom Thurmond high school football teams met back in 1961, the Rebels from Edgefield County won by 18.

On their 50th meeting Friday at Herlong Stadium, not much has changed as Strom Thurmond continued its series dominance and downed the Tigers 28-17.

At the 3:17 mark, Strom Thurmond struck first when defensive back Nate Bright intercepted Tiger quarterback Maurice Howard's errant pass. Bright caught the ball at the Saluda 30 and returned it to the 16. Rebel quarterback Jauveer Hammond scored two plays later to give Strom Thurmond a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

“Saluda had a real good game plan,” Strom Thurmond coach Lee Sawyer said. “They slowed the game down a bit, and that kept our offense over on the sidelines. When our offense was out there, we made way too many senseless mistakes and penalties in that first half.”

After the two schools traded possessions to start the second half, Saluda put together a 12-play, 61-yard scoring drive to cut the Rebel lead to 14-10. The Tigers were aided by a 15-yard defensive pass interference penalty that push Saluda into Rebel territory. Later in the drive, Howard helped himself with a 10-yard scramble on fourth-and-5. Juwan Foulks capped off the series with a 9-yard touchdown run.

Strom Thurmond responded with its own scoring drive that was aided by two facemask penalties on Saluda. Trevonte Watkins staked Strom Thurmond back to a 21-10 lead early in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard score.

Delonta Bates later added another five-yard touchdown run for the Rebels. Saluda's Malik Brooks closed the scoring on a 6-yard run with 3:39 left to play.

“Our effort was great,” Saluda coach Doug Painter said. “Our kids battled hard for four quarters, and I am proud of that.”
