An off-duty Wagener police officer was arrested for driving under the influence while driving a police vehicle, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

Craig Martin, 30, of Jordan Loop Road in Wagener, was charged for DUI early Thursday morning, according to a sheriff’s report.

The report states that a black Ford Crown Victoria police vehicle was “acting very suspicious” across the street from Kent’s Korner Store on Old Ninety Six Indian Trail. The vehicle was driving in circles around the parking lot and then back into the roadway.

At first, the deputy watching the vehicle thought the officer was conducting surveillance in the area.

After further investigation, the deputy discovered that wasn’t the case and approached the car, which was parked behind the store, the report said, but the driver sped off.

A traffic stop was conducted and the driver of the vehicle was identified as Martin, the report said.

The smell of alcohol emitted from the driver, the report read.

Martin was taken into custody and booked into the Aiken Detention Center.
