Sam's Club is set to open its Aiken store on Oct. 3. The store will be located at 220 U.S. Highway 1, near the Robert M. Bell Parkway intersection.
The new building encompasses 136,000 square feet. It will be complete with a gas station, a pharmacy, photo center and an optical department. Other features include a fresh produce section and delivery and installation services.
The store is expected to employ about 175 associates with nearly 90 percent of the hiring already done. The hiring process was handled by the Sam's Club Membership and Hiring Center, which opened in May. The center is located 156 University Parkway in Suites 101-103.
The center is also offering $40 gift cards to anyone signing up for Plus membership and a $20 gift card to those purchasing a basic membership.
The new store took about eight months to build and will be the newest Walmart family addition to Aiken County.
Earlier this week, a second Walmart was confirmed for North Augusta. The new location will be on Highway 25, off exit 5, and is expected to be complete next fall. It will be a 160,000-square-foot store, complete with an auto center and fuel center. The shopping center project will also include 34,000 square feet of retail space with restaurants such as Firehouse Subs, a Mexican restaurant and a Japanese/sushi restaurant.
Sam's Club, a subsidiary of Walmart, is a retail warehouse for members only. It was founded in 1983 and is the eighth-largest retailer in the United States with nearly 600 locations across the country.
Annual membership fees for shoppers begin at $45.
The hiring center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. People also can apply for jobs online at www.SamsClub.com/careers.
