Saluda rolls over Ridge Spring with 4th quarter explosion
The Trojans of Ridge Spring-Monetta High School stepped on the field Friday night looking for revenge following last year’s 37-0 loss to the Tigers of visiting Saluda High School. While the Trojans were able to score 12 points this go around, they were unable to keep the Tigers from matching their previous year’s total as Saluda walked away in the fourth quarter to win 37-12.
Despite an obvious size advantage held by the Tigers, the Trojans handled Saluda’s attack well and were also able to fine the end zone twice in the second quarter off a pair of Reggie Preaton touchdown passes to Travious Wigfall.
Down by just two points heading into the second half of play, the Trojans seemed to be building momentum throughout the third quarter as they kept the Tigers from scoring and put up several big plays of their own. But when Preston was sacked in the end zone for a safety, the momentum pendulum swung back in favor of Saluda, which went on the score three s’more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Despite the final outcome that included two costly picks thrown by Preston that would have certainly ended in scores had they found their marks, the Trojans held their own. Preston went 17-31 for 234 yards and two scores while Wigfall hauled in four receptions for 71 yards and his pair of touchdown catches.
Maurice Howard went 8-15 for 94 yards and was responsible for three total touchdowns, including two passing, as he led the Tigers in a ground assault that saw Malik Brooks rush 17 times for 175 yards including one touchdown. Chris Christie and Jamarion Mathis had the two interceptions for Saluda.
The Trojans will next travel to Dixie High School in Due West, SC next Friday, Sept. 6. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
