HANAHAN (AP) — Police said one person is dead following an exchange of gunfire after a late-night traffic stop in Hanahan.

Hanahan Police Lt. Mike Fowler said an officer tried to pull over a car just before midnight on Monday for a traffic violation. The car kept going but then pulled over a short time later.

Fowler said the officer removed four people from the car but one ran away. There was an exchange of gunfire and the fleeing man was killed. His name has not been released.

The officer and the other three people in the car were not hurt.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
